  • Slow, Buggy, Frustrating

I have to start it 4or 5 times before it will load. It often quits. Now it's asking me to subscribe again. If it's not fixed soon, I'll cancel my subscription. 7/7/18. It was working quite well. Then they “fixed” it. The latest version will not open. 2/9/2020 The app was working well for quite a while. Now all of a sudden, it no longer recognizes my subscription. I go through all the steps to link my subscription and it tells me I’m successful. Then when I try to use the app, it tells me I have no more “free” stories this month. It’s frustrating and I will probably cancel my subscription.

  • Content curation could be better

Ok, it took a week and direct contact with the developers, but they have now fixed the sign-on problem and the app recognizes my subscription again. It’s working as well as ever and I’ll go back to 3 stars. I do wish I could dial it back to previous days’ issues and search for older articles the way I can with most other periodicals. I think their repeating some articles day after day and cross posting them to multiple sections, while annoying, is their way of sort of compensating for that limitation. Speed seems better. The current news and their internal columnists seem to get posted pretty regularly and promptly. But there have been shocking lapses with syndicated columnists, like Dear Abby getting stuck on the same column for weeks on end, or comics getting skipped some days, even though the print edition much more consistently has the current content. I find that the facsimile print edition remains a necessary backup. ... Even worse since my last bad review (below). I’m dropping it to one star because l’ve been unable to use the app at all this week. It refuses to recognize my subscription and won’t display any stories. Called support twice. They acknowledged that the app is having troubles with subscriptions and promised it would be fixed in a day or two. Now at the end of the week, l’m still stuck with reading the facsimile edition in my browser. Might as well just give up and uninstall the app since evidently no one with any competence whatsoever is managing it. ... This app has been going downhill since the more positive review I a year or two ago. Granted it’s generally faster and crashes less now. But various bad design decisions and bad content curation have made it so difficult to use that I now frequently find it necessary to leave the app and instead go to the Chronicle’s facsimile edition in Safari. This is particularly true for the Datebook section and for other articles that while headlined in other sections seem to be retrieved from Datebook. They come up excruciatingly slowly and seem not to be readable at all from other countries while travelling. And periodically whole blocks of content disappear like some columns or most of the comics for the past week. To your answer: No, it is not an updating the app problem. Missing content is a curation problem, and eventually someone notices and fixes it, like the comics came back today after going missing over the weekend. The speed and accessibility-from-Europe issues have been with us for months and are a fundamental design problem dating from when someone decided to replace A&E with Datebook wrapped from sfchronicle.com or something of that sort.

App stopped working, ignoring ‘unlimited access’ subscription status. Customer service says there’s a problem. Just wait and keep trying. Three weeks and counting!
  • One of the worst apps

The app has defects. I have a print subscription of the Chronicle. However, the app does not recognize it after several attempts to link the two. The app looks like it was developed without proper testing. It reminds me of Boeing firing large numbers of programmers years ago.
  • App has become worthless!

Over the last few days, the app has spontaneously stopped recognizing my online digital subscription obtained through the Chronicle (rather than the iTunes Store). I purchased the online subscription so that I can access the chronicle via the web as well, but now the app has become worthless as it tells me I do not have a subscription, despite “linking” it several times to my digital account.
  • Annoying

The app was working well until I began getting pop-ups telling me I had used up my free allotment of stories...? I’m told I need to subscribe now to the app for $5.99 per month. Yet in the “fine print” it’s clearly stated that access through the app is included if you’re a subscriber to the print version -which I am. Phone support tells me to be patient... Really?!?
  • Doesn’t sync my print subscription any more

It asks me to subscribe or link my print subscription. I link my print subscription, and it returns to the app — which asks again. Sheesh.
  • Family sharing not working

After several phone calls to Apple and Chronicle support still cannot make this app to work on anything other than my husband’s phone although we have Family Sharing. Apple ID doesn’t work as sign in, Chronicle subscription lookup doesn’t see purchases made via Apple. “Buy another subscription” was the advice of Apple Support, or “leave a comment. “ which I am doing. Btw subscription NOT through Apple allows for 5 extra logins.

Kind of frustrating. I am 50% old fashioned and continue to receive the paper edition. So, the app is supposed to be included. Now the app claims I have to subscribe in addition to paying for the paper. Please fix this bug.
