Discover and control what data is collected about you by Internet of Things technologies (or “resources”). The Internet of Things (or “IoT”) is everywhere. It consists of a myriad of devices and technologies that collect data about us - from cameras with facial recognition and other AI algorithms, to smart speakers that record what we say, or sensors that track our mobile phones to name just a few. The IoT Assistant app helps you discover and control what data is being collected by IoT resources around you - who is collecting it, who it is shared with, and for how long it is retained. New privacy regulations in the US and Europe require people who deploy IoT resources to disclose their data collection and use practices and to also give us some control over these practices such as opting in or out of them. The IoT Assistant app provides users with a single interface through which they can discover IoT resources around them and access privacy options made available to them by these resources. If you would like to publicize the presence of one or more IoT resources in a particular area, visit our IoT Portal at to help IoT Assistant app users discover these IoT resources.

  • Great Concept. Needs Work

    By ProfessorGeex
Pros: Easily the best way to make people more aware of how IoT devices impact their privacy. Brilliant idea. Cons: Almost everything else. The signup process is inefficient. The interface is intuitive enough, but scrolling/opening menus/general interaction is noticeably choppy. The experience reminded me of a 8yo BlackBerry Z10 I got last year for free. Whines: Sparse data so far. Expecting that to improve as adoption goes up. System: 64GB iPhone SE. Fully updated, good WiFi connection.
  • A long ways to go

    By sry12001
Despite the bright shining new announcement - has a ways to go So far - Impossible to do the required email verification. These guys should really try out their app before sending it to the store! Wait a few weeks and see.
  • Disappointed

    By ?z:;$34
After the long and intense sign up process, I was very curious to see results. All I get is my location on a map. The previous reviewer said that everyone has to enter the information of devices...what is the point of this app then? There should be a user manual as well. When I first loaded the app, the map showed Nigeria...I grabbed a screenshot of this, now I am really shaking my head...
  • App is useless

    By Oettel75
Does not detect any devices near me!
  • Don’t use

    By magnusblikstad
Showed nothing. Wonder if the data collected was only mine.
  • Really CMU? Crappy experience-expected better

By Don't Own an iPhone Yet
If this is what the best and brightest at CMU can produce then heaven help us! After the third go-around trying to sign up for an account I gave up. It throws you into an endless loop of signing up, verifying your email, then resetting your password. Not worth it, deleted the app and won’t ever check back.
  • Nice app and concept!

I couldn't see anything near me but after I zoomed out, I found a few things in Pittsburgh, including a ShotSpotter! I REALLY like the idea of having some control of my privacy and I hope there can be more locations available. BTW I was able to get the verification email in my gmail without an issue
  • Broken app

    By Ars6710
    Broken app! Doesn't work!
  • Appears to be non-functional.

    By Kirkkerekes
Ignoring the blatantly user-hostile and privacy-hostile sign up process, what remains is an app that appears to do _nothing_ but locate your device on a map. Or else there is no data collection happening _anywhere_ in the continental US. Did anybody _test_ this before uploading it to Apple?
  • Very helpful!

    By 简直让人想不通
The app actually shows me a number of security cameras around me, which I didn’t know that actually exist! Amazing!
