For beginners and experienced meditators alike, Waking Up is for people who understand that meditation isn’t just about feeling better in the moment. Real meditation changes a person’s view of the world. WHY IS WAKING UP DIFFERENT FROM OTHER MEDITATION APPS? * Meditation is often taught as though it were an ancient version of an executive stress ball. But it’s more like the Large Hadron Collider. Waking Up users quickly understand that there are fundamental discoveries to be made in the laboratory of their own minds. * Waking Up guides you through a 50-day introductory course before unlocking access to an ongoing series of daily meditations. If you’re a novice, you need this. (And if you’re an experienced meditator, you probably do, too.) All meditations are created and led by Sam Harris. * Waking Up also contains a growing curriculum of short talks by Sam Harris on a wide variety of topics relevant for deepening your practice. * Waking Up never resorts to gimmicks or pseudoscience. The app contains only what you need to make fundamental insights into the nature of your mind. “I’ve been incredibly impressed with this app. Whether you want to sharpen your mind or experience more peace, this can help in dramatic fashion. The power of its progression is hard to overstate.” — Tim Ferriss Tim Ferriss is an early-stage investor in technology companies and the author of five #1 New York Times bestsellers, including The 4-Hour Workweek and Tools of Titans. He hosts the popular podcast, The Tim Ferriss Show. ABOUT SAM HARRIS Sam Harris is the author of five New York Times bestsellers, including Waking Up: A Guide to Spirituality Without Religion. His writing and public lectures cover a wide range of topics—neuroscience, meditation, moral philosophy, religion, rationality—but generally focus on how a growing understanding of ourselves and the world is changing our sense of how we should live. Sam received a degree in philosophy from Stanford University and a Ph.D. in neuroscience from UCLA. He has practiced meditation for over 30 years and has studied with many Tibetan, Indian, Burmese, and Western meditation teachers, both in the United States and abroad. He has spent a total of two years in silent retreat under the guidance of Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche, Nyoshul Khen Rinpoche, Sayadaw Upandita, Joseph Goldstein, and others. • lessons section sets this apart from the rest

Before this app was out, I had used headsp*ce some but could never get it to stick. That app wasn’t bad and in fact I even enjoyed the accent of the guy’s voice. During the guided meditations in Waking Up, the few words that Sam says all resonate and seem deliberate. Pair that with what he has to say in the Lessons section and you have an app that gives you superpowers. Go do the first 5 days and trust me, there isn’t a better way to get into meditation than “waking up” and downloading this app.
  • Beautifully crafted application

    By ToasterInTub
Whether or not I’m able to harness the ability of meditation doesn’t mean much in regard to the functionality of this application. It’s a really gorgeous and well thought-out design. I found myself a tad hesitant to navigate the app during the welcome portion, but then realized that, unlike the poorly designed YouTube or other audio apps, that the audio player functions much like a podcast and allows users to fully flow in and out of features without interrupting the audio by pausing or forcing a restart. I’m super impressed. Thanks for the effort and I’m looking forward to using this application.
  • Disappointed

As a fan of Sam Harris, I am disappointed that he would create an app like this. I am also disappointed in all my fellow Harris fans for giving this app a five star rating. It seems Sam Harris has obtained a cult-like following, and has achieved guru status. The reality is that there is zero evidence that meditation is of any benefit to people, it provides a placebo effect at best. I feel Sam Harris is being very disingenuous for releasing a subscription based app like this, which mostly promotes nonsense. He is basically ripping off his fanboys. I’m still a fan of Sam’s huge contributions on so many issues, but I honestly have lost a little respect for the man.
  • Possibilities of Meditation

Prior to using this app I read several books on mindfulness meditation including the one by Sam Harris, the developer of this app. I also spent several months meditating by focusing on the breath without fully understanding what I hoped to gain. I used the free App Oak and listened to the YouTube meditations shared by Joseph Goldstein. However I feel more “enlightened” by learning from the waking up app. A combo of reading books by the philosophy of Karl Popper, David Deutsch’s From here to Infinity, Sean Carroll’s “The Big Picture”, Steven Pinker, Max Tegmark’s “Our Mathematical Universe” and the wonderful book of essay’s collected by John Brockman under the title “This Idea is Brilliant” along with this terrific app and Sam Harris’s wonderful podcast has lead to a happier me.
  • Revolutionary

As someone who’s been meditating for years, read countless books and followed different gurus, these are hands down the best guided practices I’ve come across. I’d pay SOOOO much more for this app than what’s it being sold for. Thank you Mr. Harris.
  • Worth the time

I don’t understand why it took my so long after downloading the app to actually use it. It might just be that I didn’t take the time to actually pay attention. Meditation helps reduce stress. I’m sure any app would help with this, I just happen to like Sam’s monotone voice. If this week continues productively I might actually pay for the full course.
  • Incredible - Needs Airplay2 Bug Fix

    By TeaNation
Incredible content. I love taking 1 lesson a day and 1 meditation a day. Big bug to fix: lessons and meditations aren’t counted if you listen to them via Airplay2. Once this is fixed I’ll update my review to 5 stars.
  • Phenomenal Meditation App

    By DustinDC
Such a valuable resource for meditation practice. The lessons provide excellent context while the meditations allow you to gradually build upon your skills and habits. Highly recommended!
  • Wowed on day 3

    By msmagen
I’ve dabbled in meditation for about 2 years now. I’ve read 10% Happier (would recommend) and have also tried other meditation apps. I haven’t been able to stick with the practice, however. I’m only on day 3 of this course, but I just had an amazing experience that I’m not sure I’ve had before using other apps or practicing solo. I felt like my body just melted away and I was only sensation. It was amazing and powerful. I listen to Sam’s podcast and trust him intellectually. I absolutely think that this has something to do with the effectiveness of this app for me. I find that the medium of podcasting makes you feel like you sort of “know” the host after listening to their voice in your ear for hours and hours cumulatively. This has the effect of seeming like I have my own personal mediation teacher! It does not feel like it has been recorded for the world and played by thousands. Can’t wait to see what else is in store and how this helps me to grow my practice.
  • Great meditation

    By KKicechic
Great meditation. Sam has a calming & comfortable voice and his mindfulness lessons help me start my day - my mind is clear(er) instead of filled with errands and last week's conversations.
