    I have been enjoying the Waking Up app since about December of last year. I sat through the first 50 days and learned some different methods that have repeated and been reinforced, even now as I practice with the daily guided meditations. Sam rotates us through these different methods and gives new cues or guiding statements that help to make the path more clear. I got a free version by promising to tell others who seem interested about Waking Up, and in fact have bought the book for two colleagues and a 3 month gift to Waking Up for a colleague. I only wish that I had access to the AMA section, but I think I have to be a regular subscriber which I will do once this year is up, maybe sooner. I’d really love to know more about time spent practicing meditation. These sessions are all ten minutes with a few seconds of reflection at the end, but I haven’t encountered instruction or recommendations about when or why to extend the time spent practicing, including recommendations for more that one session per day. My wife and kids have joined in on the practice a few times, but it’s mostly just me early in the morning. And I usually follow up the practice session by Listening to one of the lessons (another helpful part of the app)or part of a podcast relating to mindfulness. Sam has a podcast called Making Sense which features a variety of guests and topics and has turned me on to several other podcasters. I’ve read Waking Up several times, along with Sam’s other books, and appreciate the secular and usually scientific practical approach. I urge others to check this out, read Waking Up, and practice joining your mind to now.

    In Waking Up, Sam Harris provides the most comprehensive, thorough, and effective meditation course that I have ever tried. After 6 months, with some digressions, admittedly, my entire way of living in the world has improved exponentially. At one point I had a really busy week, missed 3 or 4 days, and wondered how I ever navigated the world without the practice. Most of us, including me, take for granted just how chaotic our minds have become in the modern world, pulled in every direction at once, surely developing a smart phone induced ADD if we didn’t already have a version sculpted by the infotainment megalopolis. Although meditation is not for everyone, particularly those with bipolar or extreme conditions of anxiety or other mental illnesses, if you, like me, have a mental illness directly related to the insanity of modern day culture, with its frenetic energy, blurring of truth, and toxic media, then this is the cure. In fact, I would call a faithful execution of this course the best chance that we have to cope with the human condition, especially in the 21st century. Indeed, I am not exaggerating when I say wondered how I ever lived without it. Judgment is the enemy of freedom. And you probably don’t even fully know who you really are, and likely judge yourself and others constantly, and are blindly stumbling through a mental prison of your own creation. First, forgive yourself, then forgive the world—download this app, and re-discover the freedom that you likely haven’t felt since you were a child, if ever.

    Sam’s thoughtful and clear guidance provides a very cohesive basis for developing a meditation practice. His is a uniquely rational and no-nonsense approach, but it also delves deeply into profound questions of being and ethics. What Sam is doing here is quite groundbreaking and will hopefully help bring insight meditation to an even wider audience.
