It’s the only app that allows you to create a route that has smart linking (or whatever it’s called) , which allows you to choose whether you’re hiking or driving off road and only put dots along the route and the app lays the route over existing hike trails or 4x4 roads .... what!? That’s it, that’s the deal breaker, I don’t use any other app just because of that. But then add the insane bank of maps available to use and use together with blending options and such, there alone also puts this app above all others. Combine these two features and they’re light years ahead of any other. But wait, now they added CarPlay support !!?? Foggetaboutit!!

Walking, hiking, off-roading, and recording all of that. Gaia has been one of the most important items I make sure to have with me. I pay for the membership to be able to download maps. Going out of cell service about twice a month to camp, hike, off-road, the app gives me the confidence to go farther, knowing that I can find my way back. I use it on my iPhone, iPad, and occasionally on my Apple Watch. The Apple Watch app is okay but clunky. The map page is, for all intents and purposes, useless. Its load time will take longer than you’d ever want to keep holding your arm up. I would for it to work faster, however, I’m not sure what I could do to improve it.
  • Off-roading use

I have used this app for 4 years now for off roading and overall it is a great app. I’m only giving it 4 stars right now because i would like to see a setting that lets you see the map in track up position full time. In all fairness the app does let you do this somewhat but as soon as you touch the screen to move the map or zoom in or out, it turns the feature off. There should be a way to set the app in this mode and leave it there until you want to turn it off. I know this has been requested multiple times but the developers ignore the request. I would think this would be simple to do and if they want to capture the off road market it would be a key feature people would want.
  • How Can This Be?

I seriously question the high ratings of this app. I have used Gaia’s online interface to search for trails and then loaded them on my phone with their iOS app only to find that the ascent information and elevation profiles are completely different. Some were incorrect by almost 30% for the exact same trail. Also, when will your app be enabled with the feature which allows tapping on an elevation profile to show the point on the map? Most other trail apps have been provide if this useful feature for several years as does your web interface.
  • Free version map is from “18th” century after recent update.

After a recent update the map in free version of the app was downgraded to a map from the 60s that literally is missing a major freeway where I live. Will change this review once the free version map is restored to a version from a month ago. Meantime will be using TopoMaps+

When I first got this paid a lot and was worth it. Now you want to charge $20/year? Not fair to some folks on a limited income 🙁 Update: developers are very responsive to any concerns or issues. I now have the Gaia topo maps back with the saved data. Thanks to you all for a great product that has been so reliable. Customer support is first class!

I use Gaia nearly every weekend not only for personal use but also for our search and rescue team. If you’re looking for a great app for navigation, look no further.
  • Overall quite good, could use a couple improvements

Gaia GPS has come a long way since I tried using it awhile back. It be my go-to GPS tracker now. The new dark map is really pleasant to use. The app is great for planning trips. Routes can be made easily right from the app. I’m REALLY hoping they don’t add social media functionally to this app. There are enough GPS trackers with that, and it really degrades the experience and adds bloat. That has already started happening a little bit with the community features they’ve added. Hopefully they don’t take this further. People just want a good, solid tracker! Apple Health would be a nice integration. The ability to have exercises recorded and see heart rate in the app would be great for hikes and mountain biking.

An already amazing navigation app just got even better with the update to the Gaia Topo later. I only wish the trails were a tad darker to make them pop off of the map/screen more. Is it possible to make this an option? Love what you guys are doing!
